The Souks of Marrakech
Above, leading off from the Djemaa El Fna, the main square and heart of Marrakech, are the famous Souks - a colourful, vibrant labyrinth of stalls selling jewelry, spices, textiles, leather goods, wood and metal works, clothing, rugs and babouches (Moroccan slippers). Collectively, the Souk stalls are testament to a deep, living culture of craftsmanship in Morocco, built up over centuries of trading and occupation by civilisations including the Phoenicians and the Romans.
Equipped with only the basics in haggling, visitors often come away from the Souks with more purchases than they can carry! Fortunately, nowadays many Marrakech hotels and riads can arrange for items to be transferred to your home by international courier.
