Tigmi is located some 20 minutes outside Marrakech in a small village called Tagadert, between the hubbub of the city and the tranquility of the Atlas Mountains. Originally built in 1840 the main house was recently renovated by local artisans into a spacious hotel, complete with swimming pool, hammam and restaurant. Divided by a small farmer's track, a second wing of Tigmi opened in 2008 offering another pool and more comfortably modern yet authentically rustic rooms. Tigmi provides a very peaceful, refreshing stay for travelers wishing to relax and be pampered whilst, at the same time, the area is well suited to young travellers wanting to explore the rural areas of Morocco by hike or by bike.
Tigmi offers standard, deluxe and suite style rooms throughout the year. Once inside the adobe exterior the interior decoration blends into the rural environment with simple white-washed walls, vivid wall-hangings and woven furnishings made by Tigmi’s resident weaver. Seventeen of the twenty-one rooms are air-conditioned whilst many retaining their original fireplaces that are used in winter. Some of the rooms on the ground floor are not air-conditioned but are naturally cool as they open out onto one of the eight courtyards or gardens. On the upper floors guests’ rooms open onto terraces with clear views toward the city and to the Atlas Mountains. Some of the suites benefit from having a private plunge pool or enclosed courtyard of their own. For family groups, Tigmi offers a choice of rooms that are interconnected.
Read MoreOutside the gardens are shaded by banana palms, citrus and olive trees, whilst sun beds are placed conveniently on the unexpected stretch of lawn beside the pool with parasols and tables to read, sunbathe or watch the swallows with their air acrobatics. Away from the pool, guests will discover collections of novels (all in English) squirreled away in the alcoves of lounges. These lounges are spacious with high ceilings and are fitted neatly with sofas and chairs. Proving to be welcoming places to retreat from the sun the lounges still retain an excellent source of natural light by opening out onto courtyards. Meals can be served throughout the hotel but are usually outside on the terrace in warm weather with a fantastic panoramic view over the neighbouring land expanse. The cuisine Tigmi serves derives from local organic ingredients wherever possible and the olive oil used in Tigmi’s cooking is produced only 500 yards away. Guests with vegetarian or dietary requests should notify the hotel before their arrival. Twenty staff are employed at Tigmi allowing a favourable ratio of staff members to guests, nearly all of them coming from the local village creating a healthy relationship between the hotel and local people.
Tigmi’s more remote location makes it ideal for sport related activities such as mountain biking (bikes can be rented from Tigmi), hiking, water sports at a nearby lake, and even micro light flying. Those seeking a less strenuous holiday may enjoy a stroll to the nearby local village where guests can find an authentic Moroccan piece to take back with them. However, as Tigmi employs its own resident weaver, guests can easily draw up a design for a piece and have it made to order. For an even less demanding visit, guests can take full adavantage of the massage therapies, skin treatments, hammam steam-room, swimming pools and mini gym that Tigmi offers. The hammam is large compared to those of the city riads and thus creates a relaxing atmosphere. Moreover, as Tigmi maintains a room for each separate therapy, guests will feel their privacy well respected.

The Editor's Summary
Recent guests have commented positively, regarding Tigmi as a “stunning example of a good Moroccan hotel” because of its “incredibly spacious” grounds and relaxation facilities such as the swimming pools, outdoor terraces, gardens and hammam therapies. Guests emphasise the comfortable furnishings of Tigmi, the pleasant staff and the “high standard of interior decoration”. Outside of the hotel guests have explored mountain biking, other nearby activities are definitely worth trying, but Tigmi is a quiet rural hotel, a complete opposite to Marrakesh city, and this may not suit those wanting to see and do everything. Reviews have revealed that Tigmi’s food is fairly limited and guests have not had a choice in dinner arrangements. This should be noted, especially for guests with vegetarian or dietary requests.
Excellent hotel, fantastic location, warm welcome. stay here.

We stayed at Tigmi for 3 nights and started off the first day just placing in the area. We walked around the village and the hotel grounds (the gardens are lovely) and went for a swim when the heat got too much for us. Our rooms were lovely and cool, just what you want to come back to after a long hot day and the beds were very comfortable. After the noise of Marrakesh Tigmi was amazingly quiet and felt almost too rural! The second day we hired some bikes out and went cycling around which was fun, and the third we went back to our relaxing by the pool and tried out some hammam which I’d never experienced before. Although Tigmi was a lovely guesthouse and the staff would do anything to please we didn’t feel there was enough to keep us there and felt we had made a good decision only booking 3 nights. A great hotel for those who want to reside by the pool and read a book, not so good for urbanites. For us Tigmi made a good break and fulfilled our concept of a real holiday – lots of relaxation!! Only disappointment was the food, we were surprised at the lack of a menu to chose from and were only given what they had. However the food was hearty and tasty. Apart from that Tigmi was lovely.

We booked this for February and enjoyed a night here, it wasn’t quite what we were used to as we have stayed in smaller riads before but we found it to be perfect. The rooms had everything we needed as did the hotel- it was incredibly spacious as the grounds are fairly large and this suited the quietude that surrounded the small village. We felt welcomed when we arrived and we are planning another trip in 2009 as they seem to keep changing their facilities and we’ve heard there’s meant to be a new spa coming soon.

Tigmi is an impressive hotel set in the desert far enough from the buzz of marrakesh city with views towards the snow capped Atlas mountains. The swimming pools and hammam as well as the high standard of interior decoration makes Tigmi a stunning example of a good Moroccan hotel. The staff (although not fluent in English) were nice enough and served good basic meals. Despite all of this the rural location made it a very very slow stay, a little too quiet for my liking and the price of the rooms were a little more than other hotels in the city, which didn’t make sense to me. Overall I would recommend Tigmi, but might travel around a bit more before heading back there for a quiet stay.
