OtherDescription
Built in 1920, the Arabo-Andalousian house of Riad Mabrouka was renovated and restored in 2000 to create a guesthouse of 6 suites and 2 rooms, complete with a small swimming pool and restaurant. Since its opening, Mabrouka has become a chosen riad for guests looking for a comfortable stay to re-charge their batteries as much as for those wanting to explore Fes and its surrounding attractions.
Well furnished and decorated examples of French and Moroccan interiors are present in all the guestrooms. Despite Mabrouka’s renovation this riad appears almost unchanged with its sculpted plasterwork, traditional cedar wood ceilings and colourful mosaics. However the hotel has made use of contemporary comforts such as air-conditioning (or heating in winter) and en-suite facilities in all rooms. The ground floor rooms can be a little dark for those who like bright light but these rooms benefit from opening out onto Mabrouka’s courtyard. Similarly the Amira Suite located on the first floor, opens directly onto the terrace and the Attarine room is split-level allowing for impressive views. The Royale suite is perfect for small families due to its king-size double bed and adjacent room for another guest. Additionally, the Bayda room links with the Mérinides suite, useful for groups of guests wishing to stay together.
Read MoreMabrouka’s rooms are arranged around a central courtyard incorporating the swimming pool. The pool is accessible through the internal courtyard with fountain and seating. The roof terrace is more spacious, well supplied with comfortable sub-beds and provides panoramic views of the city and scenic countryside. Meanwhile the veranda is where Mabrouka serves its meals and French and Mediterranean cuisines are available with 24 hour notice. As the menu for dinner can be repeated, guests can find easy alternatives to Mabrouka’s dishes in the main square, via Bab Boujloud, providing a range of cafes and restaurants.
In addition to the attractions of the main square, its souk markets and small shops, Fes is surrounded by countryside and mountains which guests can choose to explore by hiking, cycling and horse riding. Nearby activities such as the Royal Golf course or Moulay Yacoub Spa may also appeal. If guests wish to explore further the Roman ruins of Volubilis are within a one and a half hour drive and Mabrouka’s staff are always happy to book car and guide hire. Moreover Mabrouka can arrange transfers to other cities in Morocco if guests plan to continue their travelling.

The Editor's Summary
Recent reviews have been encouraging for Mabrouka, guests have enjoyed the hotel’s location, bordering the city allowing guests to easily reach its centre whilst guests can also “appreciate Moroccan countryside” nearby. Reviews suggest Mabrouka’s staff are attentive and thoughtful, creating “a gentle atmosphere” for their guests.
The ground floor bedrooms face the communal central patio of the riad, and as a review has commented, this made a guest’s stay “a bit public and also noisy”, however with many bedrooms on the first floor guests can have a choice over this.
I came to ryad mabrouka with a friend and stayed in the el Bali suite. It was quite nice but the fact it opened onto the internal patio made it a bit public and also noisy.
In general we enjoyed our stay and we would recommend mabrouka to those looking for a riad with a gentle atmosphere and good service.

If you want a relaxed riad in a city location but just far out enough to be able to appreciate Moroccan countryside then Mabrouka is for you. Its authentic decoration and French furniture is at first slightly odd but works well. This goes for the food too. The breakfasts were glorious on the veranda, very fresh and quite big – juice, teas, coffee, crepes, crossaints and bread rolls with homemade jams. The setting was ideal for us as we just wanted some time together and to do a little sightseeing, we stayed three nights in march (so it was a little cold but the staff didn’t need any pushing to turn up the heating) and we hope to return whenever possible!
