Description

Located just north of the ancient medina in Marrakech, Riad Zina is a 350-year-old family house, owned by Beate and staffed by another two ladies who began the hotel ten years ago. Once inside the small, solid wooden entrance door, the thick stone walls of Zina instantly creates a safe environment of sanctuary and, with only four guestrooms, of spacious modesty. Although there is no in-house spa or swimming pool Riad Zina benefits from a practical internal courtyard and a sunny roof terrace with shaded area for guests to lounge in the evenings and where breakfast is served in the mornings. With experienced, down-to-earth staff who are always on hand to advise guests on how to get around the city, recommend excursions or book activities, Riad Zina is a proven good base for guests wishing to explore the city.

The decor of the rooms at Riad Zina is refreshing and interesting. Whilst details of the original house reveal themselves in the Alkamar Suite with its cedar wood ceilings and intricate plasterwork, Beate takes pride in displaying paintings by modern Moroccan artists. Additionally against the whitewashed walls and ochre tadlekt, colourful French furnishings from the 1970s bought from local flea-markets deliver an eccentric touch. The two rooms on the first floor are air-conditioned and boast high ceilings, private balconies and views over the courtyard. The two ground floor rooms do not share these advantages but are still spacious and comfortable.

The lounge garden arranged within the courtyard is well maintained with various cacti, impressively reaching the roof of the riad, and a fountain filled with fresh roses central to the space. These traditional features are a reminder of the age of the house, whilst more modern glass cases hold a collection of books for guests to read. Wide leather sofas fill the alcoves and create a comfortably shaded space to admire the plants or meet the resident tortoise.

Authentic Moroccan meals at the riad are readily available upon request and includes many ingredients and dishes which are made on site by the staff (jams and cakes etc) who also serve mint-tea, coffee and fresh pastries throughout the day. For guests intending to sample more Moroccan cuisine, the main square is a twenty minute walk away and offers a range of places to eat and drink. Restaurant bookings can be made through the hotel, as can car or taxi hire. For guests hiring a car to drive onwards as part of their stay in Morocco, private parking is just 200 metres from the riad and is available to guests at all times.

Staff are ready to recommend or organise guests’ excursions around Marrakesh and specific parts of Morocco. Examples of these may be a local spa offering massage and beauty treatments or sport-related activities such as horse-riding, swimming, tennis and golf. Riad Zina can also organise special occasions for guests whether it be a birthday, honeymoon or wedding anniversary, on request.

Where is it?

Riad Zina can be reached easily by car with a 10 minute drive from Marrakesh airport, or a 2.5 hour drive from Casablanca airport. The riad is just north of the medina, a 5 minute walk to Musee de Marrakech and a 10-15 minute walk to the centre of Marrakech.

The Editor's Summary

open quoteGuests which have stayed at Riad Zina recently, have weighed up the hotel’s pros and cons, considering the riads quiet “residential location” to its basic facilities (without pool or in-house spa). Many reviewers have praised the female staff for their “accommodating” nature and wealth of city knowledge. Overall Zina appears to be reasonably priced hotel, just outside central Marrakesh allowing (particularly female) guests to feel safe in a less noisy off the medina.close quote

open quoteBeing our first riad we were unsure of what to expect but arriving late at night after a fairly long flight we knew we'd made the right choice. Although hard to find, you quickly find your way around the area and become accustomed the to high-paced streets nearby. Each time we let ourselves through the fortified-looking door of the riad we were relieved to see the riad's white walls, tall cacti and our room on the ground floor. The message we felt the riad delivered was a homely one, the owner Beate was incredibly kind and was happy to show us to the main square on our first day as she was heading that way. We really didn't want to leave after only three nights and hope we can return soon and enjoy the hospitality Beate provided so warmlyclose quote

open quoteRiad Zina is a lovely little riad on the edge of the medina in marrakesh. Perhaps not as well facilitated with a pool or sauna as some, but comfortable and relaxed, its residential location means it’s a relief from the medina (even though its a mystery to find at first) and Zina’s staff are very accommodating.close quote

open quoteI went to Morocco for the first time with friends in January. We knew it would be a little cold but Riad Zina was a warm and cosy find. Its true that Marrakesh is a bit of an assault on the senses - as my first trip is was brilliant but also terrifying but the riad was reassuring with hearty meals on request and the female staff were fountains of knowledge on the city and we got on just about OK with understanding each other despite the language barrier! The fact the hotel has only female staff was a real bonus and something I really recommend for female travellers, felt safe and very welcome! The scale of Zina means you get a more personal service from the staff and there was no need for us to buy a travel guide for local attractions in the end. I’d definitely think of coming back here as it felt like a safe place to stay at reasonable cost. It was a great venue to catch up with friends but I can see myself coming with family as well. close quote
