Description
Once owned by a wealthy local merchant of Fes, Riad Numero 9 is a charmingly traditional three-storey home, built in the eighteenth century. The present owners originally bought the riad as a holiday home but their choice to renovate and open it as a guesthouse in 2007 allows guests to take advantage of having a home from home in one of three cosy rooms of this relaxed riad.
The owners have made a stylish masterpiece of Riad Numero 9. Stephen, an American ex-creative director has kept the rooms traditional, retaining their ornamental carved cedar wood ceilings and doors where possible and mosaic tiling. However, his keen eye for detail has introduced eclectic, unique elements to the riad such as orange python-skin cushions and 1930’s Venetian mirrors. Bruno, on the other hand, once a French restauranteur, has the know how when it comes to serving delicious French or Moroccan cuisine made only with fresh, organic ingredients.
The doors of Riad Numero 9 open onto a central courtyard with a large sunken Japanese table where guests may be served for dinner (guests are encouraged to seek alternatives for lunch). Adjacent to the table is a fish-pond and two salons welcoming guests to dine indoors or lounge with a selection of arty books. The three guestrooms all look over the same courtyard, the standard room being situated on the first floor and is joined by the junior suite on the other side. Ascend another staircase and guests will find the master suite, extending over the whole third floor. This suite is not only spacious but beautifully decorated in French, English and Asian antiques.
Read MoreStephen and Bruno have revealed to us that the deciding factor in purchasing the riad was the rooftop terrace. Offering spectacular views over the medina as well as providing a quiet space to sunbathe or cool down in the shaded area surrounded by aromatic orange and lemon trees, cacti and culinary herbs, guests cannot help being drawn here. Additionally, a small second kitchen and barbeque are set here to provide guests with refreshments.
Riad Numero 9’s location is ideal for guests wishing to explore Fez to the limit, but if guests desire to travel further a field, staff are able to organise transportation and excursions.
Where is it?
Riad Numero 9 is a 20-30 minute drive from Fez airport and a 10 minute walk from the medina or main square of Fez.

The Editor's Summary
“A delight!” is just one of the many positive comments left by recent guests of Riad Numero 9. Reviews have praised the “whimsical mix of tradition and chic vintage style” the owners have employed during renovation and decoration’ paying attention to the Moroccan “cedar wood ceiling” and a variety of “unusual chic ornaments”. Yet it is not only the guestrooms that have been admired, the “romantic roof-terrace” has been enjoyed, as have the homemade breakfasts and dinners prepared “lovingly with experience and panache” at a “very reasonable price”.
Spending five nights here was a delight! From our arrival which ran smoothly with the riad organizing transport and a porter (included in the price) to our last meal on the fifth night – lamb tagine freshly prepared by Bruno and a beautiful local wine at a very reasonable price (compared to a few restaurants we visited previously). We took the standard room, but couldn’t really see what was ‘standard’ about it! it was gorgeous – traditional cedar ceiling and stained glass panels alongside some unusual chic ornaments. Outside and above, the romantic roof terrace was a real treat after a long day sightseeing. We really cant recommend this place enough –our friends took our suggestion to take their honeymoon here for next spring.

Riad Numero 9 is one of the better riads ive stayed in in Morocco. Ive visited several times over the past 3-4 years and often found the riad’s samey, but this one was a real surprise. I think its partly due to its whimsical mix of tradition and chic vintage style, but also the fresh food from the breakfasts to the dinners made lovingly with experience and panache, and of course the creative staff who have made it all happen…thanks Riad Numero 9!
