OtherDescription
Two years of restoration with the help of local craftsmen and workmen has returned this nineteenth-century palatial property to its former glory, creating Riad L’Orangeraie in the heart of Marrakech. Located in the old town, or Mouassine district, south of the Medina, Riad L’Orangeraie provides guests with an excellent location and, based on the reviews to date, an excellent experience for guests too.
Guests have the choice of a number of rooms classically arranged around two courtyard patios. The seven rooms are divided into standards and suites, located upon the ground and first floors of the riad. Whilst all rooms share the same features such as air-conditioning and en-suite facilities, the suites are simply bigger in dimension. The vivid interiors of the bedrooms evoke their names which are taken from a variety of Middle Eastern spices; Saffron, Curcuma, Gingembre and Cannelle. The Saffron Room for example, is decorated in mandarin-coloured ‘tadelakt’ (local smooth plaster), and its accompanying en-suite bathroom with shower provides a refreshing contrast in ivory-white.
All rooms overlook either the garden patio or the pool patio. Each patio is located separately to ensure areas of peace and quiet within Riad L’Orangeraie. The garden patio is a shaded area of palm, orange and olive trees, supplying a small bubbling fountain and several aromatic plants inhabited by three friendly turtles. The second patio provides a blue mosaic-tiled swimming pool opposite three deckchairs awaiting guests with towels and straw-hats. Guests are invited to sunbathe on the roof terrace, a platform in which to view the Atlas Mountains and surrounding areas. Downstairs, the ‘b’hou’, an outside living room, provides an additional rest area out of the sun, as does an interior lounge, a stylishly cosy space in winter with skylight, large sofas, open fire-place, mezzanine-level dining table and board-games.
Read MoreThe choice of comfortable spaces within the riad provide private, tranquil areas in which to dine. Breakfast includes home-baked pancakes, flat-breads and cakes along with fresh fruit, juices and either tea or coffee usually served on the terrace in summer. Lunch and dinner are also available, consisting of salads and tagines, using the evocative spices that name the bedrooms. As there is no set menu, guests may state their preference in the morning to ensure the right ingredients are bought from the local market on the same day. Consequently Riad L’Orangeraie is very happy to cater for vegetarians and guests with dietary requests. The riad’s cook, Nadia, was taught to cook by her mother and therefore creates some of the most authentic Moroccan cuisine available in the city. Additionally the riad can organise special dinners such as banquets or cocktail parties with entertainment such as traditional Moroccan musicians and dancing.
Riad L’Orangeraie offers a small hammam of steam treatments and massages as well as a concierge service from 9am until 10pm to advise or arrange activities from local restaurant bookings to Atlas Mountain excursions.

The Editor's Summary
Guests who have recently stayed at Riad L’Orangeraie have highlighted the riad’s "unbeatable" location, explaining that Marrakech can be hot and tiring but Riad L’Orangeraie provides "a real oasis", which is a "matter of minutes" from the heart of the city. Guests have also commented on the "elegantly classical yet hip and fun" style of the riad, where the rooms are "colourful and spotlessly clean". Furthermore the riad’s "smiling staff" have been praised for creating "skillfully cooked" meals as well as service that pays "attention to detail".
Riad L'Orangeraie was an ideal riad to stay at. The location, in my view, couldn't have been better. Not even 5 minutes down the road you arrive at the beginning of the souks and the square, 5 minutes up the road you arrive at a bab where you can pick up a taxi and head off anywhere! However, do keep your eyes peeled for this place as there is no sign on the door and street signs are limited, additionally street names change according to the maps!
L'Orangeraie combines elements such as the leafy courtyard and pool as well as bright colour co-ordinated interiors for the rooms which create a vibrancy next to the white riad walls, blue pool and green of the courtyard. The riad was incredibly clean and the number of staff was perfect for maintaining the place and keeping the guests happy. Another thing to note is bring a french phrase book. Without the manager there we had a difficult time understanding the female staff who spoke very little english. Although this was frustrating at times, it really gave me the impetus to learn some french!

We stayed here for three nights and it definitely didn’t seem long enough. Wandering around Marrakech can be hot and exhausting, so it was brilliant to be able to walk back to the riad in a matter of minutes for a quick rest, a bite to eat or even a dip in the pool. Its location is unbeatable, we managed to see all of the sights we’d hoped to see, plus a few more which the riad’s staff recommended. The service here was excellent, very personalized with attention to detail. Breakfast was a highlight, overlooking the atlas mountains on the terrace with fresh breads, pancakes and jams… We’d love to return here in a year or two.

Our experience at Riad L’Orangeraie was perfect. We were met at the airport with the riad’s chauffeur and had a peaceful ride to the riad, avoiding the stress and mayhem of trying to find a taxi ourselves. No sooner had we stepped through the riad’s doors than were we greeted with smiling staff, asking us how our journey had been. We took dinner that evening (which we had pre-arranged) and really enjoyed it, the ingredients were obviously fresh and skillfully cooked. In the morning we set out to explore the city, as it only takes a few minutes from the riad to the main square we found ourselves not having to rush to see everything. Coming back to the riad at the end of the day and taking tea on the roof terrace was bliss – it’s a real oasis in an otherwise crazy city!

This was my first experience of a boutique hotel. It was elegantly classical yet hip and fun at the same time. the rooms are colourful and spotlessly clean, the room we stayed here was spacious and light, overlooking the pool. We were glad the hotel wasn’t booked up as the little noise that we did experience was amplified by the riad’s enclosed structure, also the call to prayer woke us, but this would be hard to escape in any Moroccan riad and was useful in getting us up to take advantage of a the time we had instead of lazing around! I’d definitely recommend it for young couples and groups of friends, its location is great for the city, days out and nightlife, although its located down a smallish street the riad is still easy to find and we were proud that we didn’t get lost once!
