Description

In restoring this nineteenth-century riad originally built by a successful leather merchant, Fouad Loudiyi has placed emphasis on Farsi (of Fes) family tradition by employing his two sisters to manage the riad. In turn Riad Les Oudayas has cultivated a warm, welcoming environment for guests visiting Fes. With only a five-minute walk away from Fes' centre, this riad offers a rustic, comfortable base from which to explore the city.

Spanning four levels, Riad Les Oudayas offers five suites. On the first floor, to the south of the riad, Suite Mereim provides a large double bed and a supplementary bed in an area that can easily be screened off from the rest of the room. The suite also contains a small salon area with fireplace as well as a private balcony overlooking the patio. Suite Asmae also offers a private balcony to the east of the riad, as does Suite Kenza facing north. Whilst Suite Kenza does not offer a salon area, two supplementary beds allow up to four guests to stay together. The second floor offers two more spacious suites, Suite Elias and Suite Driss, which are both furnished with two double beds and a salon area, as well as private balconies offering impressive views over the medina. All rooms at Riad Les Oudayas include en-suite bathrooms with towels, bathrobes and hairdryers as well as air-conditioning.

Two salons are located on the ground floor, one a comfortable library and the other a smoking salon. The library at Riad Les Oudayas is stocked with over 1,000 books, most on Morocco, Fez and traditional art. A cinema projector and a collection of DVDs also features and, attached to this room, is the wine bar and restaurant. Furthermore the massage room, hammam and small pool are located nearby where all therapies are carried out by an experienced female employee. Outside, the courtyard patio provides a space to relax in under the shade of the lemon, banana, pear and palm trees amongst cacti and jasmine plants. Guests may also chance upon meeting the riad’s tortoise named Zaouia.  Alternatively, the communal terrace set on the third floor of the Riad, provides a comfortable place to sunbathe with practical seating areas, daybeds and tents in case the sun gets too much for guests. This terrace also boasts an incredible view over the medina, from the winding streets of the old city to the green hills of the South Borj.

All meals at Riad Les Oudayas can be served in the indoor salons or outdoors with soft lighting under tented canopies. Breakfasts consist of pancakes, donuts and breads made fresh by the riad's cook. Honey, jams and cheeses are also provides as well as tea, coffee and orange juice. Depending on the season, fresh and dry fruits may be served. Lunches are only available on request with a menu including a choice of salads and the dish of the day is usually available for guests. Dinner is a similar arrangement of a menu offering soup, samosas, salads and a dish of the day. Pastries and hot drinks generally follow these meals, however, alcoholic beverages can be obtained at the riad’s wine bar. All food at Riad Les Oudayas is organic, furthermore the riad has its own off-site grove supplying some of the ingredients. Other sources for the dishes come from a local butcher and grocer, which the riad has chosen specially. Guests with vegetarian, or special diets are asked to fill in the riad’s questionnaire to inform the kitchen of any such preference, or allergy.

Whilst the old city of Fes provides ample attractions for guests, Riad Les Oudayas offers a range of courses appealing to those wanting a broader, practical experience of Farsi cooking and crafts (how to make traditional Tadelakt and mosaic zelliges for example). The riad can also arrange day trips to other Moroccan destinations such as the thermal centres of Moulay Yacoub, or weekend breaks for horse-riding and golf-lovers.

open quoteAs a first-time traveler to Morocco I was concerned with issues such as safety, eating-out (I’m a vegetarian) and getting lost! But Riad Oudayas reassured me on all these matters when I arrived with a small group of friends. First of all the riad is located perfectly for tourists – in a matter of minutes you find yourself walking towards the old city centre, which means getting back late in the evening isn’t a worry. Additionally, the riad employs a guard and they mentioned they had a CCTV system, which instantly put my mind at rest. As for the food, the riad was committed to catering to my vegetarian diet and it was no problem whatsoever. I had some lovely meals, vegetable soups and fresh salads. My friends also enjoyed the riad; it was great to be able to stay together in such a laid-back, family-orientated house with staff whose respect and care for your stay….close quote

open quote We spent two lovely nights at Riad Les Oudayas in April and would highly recommend it for the spacious, cool rooms, incredibly friendly staff (although most speak French, the owner does speak English) and the breathtaking view from the third floor terrace – its got to be seen to be believed! close quote

March 2009

open quoteMy wife and I were looking for a traditional, upmarket guesthouse for our trip to Fez in spring; Oudayas was the perfect choice. We were collected from the airport by a taxi we had arranged through the riad and settled in very quickly due to the warm welcome we received from the owner Loudiyi. That evening we chose to stay in for dinner. I have to say it was a little disappointing in light of the price of the meal, but the cook is obviously well-experienced as breakfast the next day made up for it- fresh bread and pancakes with butter and jam – “heavenly” as my wife put it! We spent the following days exploring the city, which is so easy to do from the riad, and decided to opt for restaurants in the main town. close quote
