Description
Set in the old city’s winding streets, Riad Ibn Battouta in Fes offers seven suites stylishly designed to mirror the journey of Ibn Battouta, a fourteen-century pilgrim who travelled extensively from Spain to China, from Africa to Russia. For instance, the Junior Suite Sindabur is decorated in Indian-rose shades, furnished with one double (2x2m) and two single beds, a separate lounge area and en-suite bathroom with a shower that produces a monsoon-like effect with three large shower-heads. Elsewhere, the Junior Suite Iwalatan is African-themed in sand-coloured tones, mosaics and a copper washbasin. All guestrooms are complete with reversible air-conditioning, mini-bar, personal safe and a bathroom stocked with good quality towels. However, the Ispahan and Sinkalan rooms have the added benefit of their own private terraces where meals can be served and views over the medina enjoyed.
Guestrooms look over the riad’s internal courtyard as well as the neighbouring medina. Under a fifteen-metre high glass roof, the marble and mosaic embellished patio offers a calm space with a small bubbling fountain central to the riad. Alternatively, the riad’s communal roof terrace offers exciting views over the city and the Atlas Mountains, a place for guests to sunbathe during the day, and tables and chairs for dining al-fresco.
Meals can also be served in guests’ rooms or in Riad Ibn Battouta’s restaurant. Dedicated to traditional Moroccan cuisine, the riad’s kitchen creates dishes from recipes dating back from the fourteenth-century, whilst only using organic ingredients bought locally from the market. Additionally, guests with vegetarian, vegan and other dietary requirements are welcomed.
Read MoreRiad Ibn Battouta’s in-house hammam and massage room receive guests for relaxation treatments using traditional methods by experienced staff. It may also be important to note that there are various sport’s facilities in and around Fes (such as golf courses and swimming pools), which the riad can help guests to discover. Additionally, staff at Riad Ibn Battouta are available to arrange day-to-day transport, excursions and restaurant bookings. Yet, the riad’s unique workshops for cookery and calligraphy allow guests to experience Moroccan culture on a first-hand basis and have proved popular.
Where is it?
Riad Ibn Battouta is a 15 minute drive from Fez airport and a few minutes walk from Fez city centre, close to the Batha museum and Bleu Gate.

Other useful information
The riad has begun creating its own library for guests and hopes to foster diversity within it by asking guests to donate a book of their choice to the collection.
Riad Ibn Battouta offers two very different workshops. For guests wishing to expand on their culinary knowledge, the riad’s workshop kitchen is open for day-long courses offering guests the chance to learn how to make a traditional Moroccan dinner. From choosing raw ingredients from the market in the morning, to a hands-on cooking session with an experienced chef in the afternoon, guests can look forward to their prepared meal in the evening. For guests more interested in the traditional arts and crafts associated with Morocco, Riad Ibn Battouta offers a practical workshop in calligraphy, an important aspect to Arabic text.

The Editor's Summary
Recent guests of Riad Ibn Battouta have found it “an experience not to forget!” Its “beautiful” interiors, roof-terrace “perfect” for dining and in-house massage therapies have been tried and tested, resulting in guests finding the riad to be “worth every penny”. Guests have been “impressed” by the riad’s commitment to “tradition” evident in the riad’s classical “internal courtyard with its pretty little fountain” and the “welcoming” staff. Additionally, Riad Ibn Battouta has been praised for its location “great for exploring the local area but slightly hidden allowing the house to remain a sanctuary”.
Highlights of our stay at Riad Ibn Battouta were the roof-terrace (perfect for breakfast and dinner when the sun isn’t too hot), our room which was quiet and cool, not to mention beautiful! The massage I had on the last day that was worth every penny, and lastly but not least - the location- on the edge of the medina, great for exploring the local area but slightly hidden allowing the house to remain a sanctuary.

Battouta was an experience not to forget! We were incredibly impressed by the interiors, the decoration, the furnishings..everything! But the riad also has real substance, Battouta is committed to tradition whether it’s the internal courtyard with its pretty little fountain or the food which we stayed in for twice because it was so good. The staff were very welcoming, greeting us with tea and biscuits on arrival and just generally doing everything they could to make our stay as comfortable as possible. Sadly, we didn’t manage to use the hammam/massage facilities or try out one of the riad’s workshops but if we ever come back to Fes this is definitely where we are headed…
