Description

A fourteenth-century house of a noble Moroccan family has been united with seven surrounding Moroccan riads by a former German ambassador to create the impressive Riyad El Cadi. Offering more rooms than most riads, this spacious, winding guesthouse is located ideally at only a two minute walk from the local souks and a five minute walk from the main Jemaa el Fna square. Whilst Riyad El Cadi is clearly a city-centre riad, the house retains an unexpected quiet and peacefulness.

Museum-worthy artefacts such as watercolour paintings, clay pots and prints create a culturally intriguing atmosphere in the twelve guestrooms that Riyad El Cadi offers. Not only are early Berber textiles, Islamic and Byzantine art incorporated but also examples of modern art produced by the Ambassador’s own acquaintances. Riyad El Cadi’s standard rooms are comfortable whilst the suites provide more space, often offering a private balcony or direct access to one of the courtyards. En-suite facilities are clean with western style baths, toilets and sinks and provide toiletaries exclusive to the riad. Many of the rooms and suites interconnect, making it easy for travelling groups to stay together. On the other hand, the Blue House is a good choice for family groups or groups of friends. With its two bedrooms, small kitchenette and own courtyard the Blue House is self-sufficient and private.

Despite its central location Riyad El Cadi is large for a Moroccan riad. In addition to the twelve guest-rooms, the riad offers a small swimming pool in the shade, hammam, restaurant and three salons. The salons are complete with television, Hi-Fi and an extensive library of Moroccan travel guides as well as comfortable large bean-bags and sofas. Outside, the leafy courtyards offer a place to sit and relax with small alcoves with seating and coffee-table books and free Wi-Fi internet. The roof-top terrace allows guests to sunbathe (or cool down on sofas under Moroccan sun shades) whilst overlooking the nearby medina.

A team of seventeen staff are employed at Riyad El Cadi, together aiming to provide a friendly service and help guests make the most of their visit. If guests are looking to pamper themselves Riyad El Cadi’s in-house hammam offers authentic Moroccan hammam treatments such as body scrubs and massage. Beauty therapies such as manicures and pedicures are also available on request.

Breakfasts and lunches at Riyad El Cadi are kept light whilst dinner is usually a three or four course meal. Guests can expect traditional Moroccan dishes as well as international styled cuisine delivered by the experienced chef. Additionally the chef can cater to those with vegetarian or dietary requests, as well as children who may be fussy eaters! Meals can be eaten at one of the tables in the courtyard decorated with fresh roses, or inside in winter lit by the skylight in day or open-fire at night.

The riad is well-placed for guests wishing to explore the city on foot. Local activities such as tennis, golf and camel or horse-riding can be arranged through staff at the riad. If guests wish to venture further, Riyad El Cadi can arrange Atlas Mountain or coastal trips.

Where is it?

Riyad El Cadi is located a 20 minute drive from Marrakesh airport, and a 5 minute walk from the main medina.

Other useful information

Activities and services can be arranged for guests including car rental, bike rental, guided tours, camel riding, hot air balloon trips, bookings of clubs or swimming pools and golf courses, cooking classes.

As the Doiriya Suite is situated above the riad's kitchen, at breakfast times the suite may suffer from some noise.

Each en-suite bathroom includes a small card explaining some of the riad's environmental policies regarding re-using towels.

A small choice of textiles, argan oils, antique Berber silver jewelry are available to buy from Riyad El Cadi.

open quoteAfter staying at a smaller riad with only four rooms last summer, we knew to expect something different from Riyad El Cadi. We chose it mainly for the location and we were not disapointed, it is literally a hop, skip and a jump from the main square and although the road that takes you there (Rue Debachi) is absolutely crazy with traffic, pedestrians and market sellers, the riad is conveniently hidden in a tiny road off the main road and remains very quiet apart from a few children playing outside during the day. We were slightly concerned that the bigger scale of this riad would create a different vibe- that the service would not be so personal and the general atmosphere would be less cozy and more public. This was true to an extent but the ratio of staff to guest is so high that there was always a waiter, porter or management on hand for advice, a refreshment or to answer a question. Our suite was very comfortable and well arranged-not too cluttered allowing the artefacts to shine through. Our only criticism was our room was dark during the day with only a small window and skylight, but riads like this do usually suffer from a lack of natural light so its to be expected. Generally we liked this riad and think it would be very appropriate for young families, friends and couples who find the intimacy of the smaller riads a bit too close for comfort and prefer the anonymity that comes with a slightly larger guesthouseclose quote

open quoteOn reserving a stay at Riyad El Cadi we felt reassured by being able to book a taxi to take us straight to the house, other times I have got utterly lost trying to locate small riads in residential backstreets so its definitely a good tip to book a taxi if you can. When we got to the riad we were taken care of, our bags were carried up to our room and we were informed about dinner. We decided to take dinner at the riad, as we were tired from travelling and weren’t quite ready for the hustle and bustle of the medina yet. We enjoyed the dinner, it was nothing extraordinary but filled a gap. The next day we spent exploring the area and the following day we had arraged (through the hotel) a trip to the Atlas mountains. This is well worth it and I’ll recommend it. It’s a breath of fresh air to get out of the city and explore the site. On our last day we used the pool and hammam before jetting off. The pool is tiny but ok for a dip, the hammam is an added bonus to the riad. We found the price of this very acceptable and would recommend it to any traveller: young or old, new to travelling, or an experienced globetrotter! close quote

open quoteRiyad El Cadi is an impeccable riad. We stayed three night in the Berber suite, it couldn’t have been better. It was beautifully presented with a comfortable bed and living room. Breakfasts were a wonderful way to start the day, we also managed to take in a couple of dinners which were good value for money with large portions. Although the riad is in a peaceful area the traditional riad style does have a disadvantage- its echoes! If visitors are looking for silence then this may not be the best option, a crying child in the room below us made one evening rather noisy for the whole riad! However the position of the riad means it was great for us to delve into the souks and medina and then escape with a relaxing massage back at the riad and a cup of mint tea! The service here was very attentive and thoughtful and was the icing on the cake! We didn’t want to leave! close quote

open quoteAs it was our first trip to Marrakesh I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I had been warned not to get my hopes to high for an inner-city renovated riad but this place was simply brilliant. It was clean, comfortable and felt very safe – the nightwatchman was very friendly and the staff were helpful when I first arrived, carrying our bags etc. Because Cadi was so near to everything the city offers we didn’t waste any time getting lost or having to get taxis to places. Everything was within a five to twenty minute walk. If you want to get to know Marrakesh, riyad el Cadi is definitely a good choice. yet, if you want a place just to relax and use the hammam this would also be good, the riad is really quiet and the staff make sure to preserve your privacy. If I ever get a chance to visit the city again this place will be top of my list.close quote
