Description
Riad Dar Karma, once the home of King Mohammed V’s French translator, offers six guestrooms and provides a comfortable and quiet place to stay between the King’s Agdal gardens and the main square of the Jemaa el Fna. The riad is also only a short drive from the airport and a few minutes walk from the city centre so a good location for guests wishing to explore the city. On arrival, guests can expect to be greeted with traditional Moroccan mint tea and pastries before being shown to their room.
A simple, sophisticated style of red drapes and dark wooden furnishings against cream-coloured walls runs through the rooms of Riad Dar Karma. Salons fitted into the alcoves off the ground floor patio are provided with sofas and chairs, and the internal patio planted with orange trees and providing a small, ornamental pool and wall fountain also allows a space for guests to take meals or simply watch the two resident tortoises make their way leisurely around the courtyard.
Rooms at Riad Dar Karma are categorized into standard rooms and first category rooms whilst the suites are either standard suites or the master suite. The rooms are categorized mainly due to size, the standard room being the smallest at 20m² and the master suite over double its space (50m²) with a private terrace. Traditional Moroccan design decorates the rooms in tadelakt, marble, mosaic and the occasional antique painted ceiling. However, modern comforts such as air-conditioning and en-suite bathrooms benefit each room.
Read MoreOn the ground floor is Riad Dar Karma’s heated swimming pool, framed by palm trees. This is open at all times and unguarded (something which guests with young children may want to take note of). The riad's hammam is also open daily for guests wishing to try one of the scrub treatments with black soap, massages or beauty therapies such as manicure. For guests looking to sunbathe, sun-beds are provided around the pool and an additional sunbathing area is found on the terrace, which opens on to a sun-deck. Complete with sun-beds, parasols and open showers and water sprayers, the terrace provides a particularly restful spot. Large sofas and areas shaded by olive and fig trees also make this terrace welcoming for guests. Furthermore, the terrace allows memorable views of the city and the distant Atlas Mountains.
Fruit baskets and general refreshments are available during the day. Breakfast is included in the price and includes continental and Moroccan options such as croissants and pancakes, breads, jams and juices. Lunch and dinner are also available and guests may find the half-board choice offered at Riad Dar Karma attractive. Cuisine available at Riad Dar Karma consists of Moroccan and European dishes.
Guests can call upon the staff at Riad Dar Karma to organise restaurant bookings and transport if necessary. The Editor's Summary
Recent guests have “enjoyed” their stays at Riad Dar Karma for the “friendly” staff who provide “impeccable” “warmth and hospitality”, as well as the riad’s “high” level of cleanliness and “gorgeous, sumptuously restrained” rooms. The location has been praised for its safety and for its “easily get-to-able” nature from the city’s sights. Alternatively, some guests have remarked that “the location was just far enough from the square to afford some peace and quiet”. The pool although “perhaps a tad small for swimmers”, has been “a joy to cool down in”. Additionally, the hammam has provided “very good” treatments and “a perfect place to feel pampered”. Although there has not been much comment on meals at Riad Dar Karma, one guests has described breakfast as a “highlight” and expressed their fondness of the riad’s “organic Moroccan dinners”.
First of all, the warmth and hospitality of the riad are impeccable. We were very impressed, and although their English isn’t immaculate, we managed with a few french words here and there. The level of cleanliness was very high, and the room we had (one of the standard suites) seemed generous in its space, especially when it came to the bathroom. Unfortunately we didn’t have time for the pool – which looked great although perhaps a tad small for swimmers. We did, however, try a massage and hammam treatment each, and we thought these were very good. A big thank you to all the staff at Riad Dar Karma!

My sister and I really enjoyed our four nights at Riad Dar Karma, by the end of it we truly felt that we had relaxed and made the most of our time there. The pool was a joy to cool down in, and the hammam- a perfect place to feel pampered. The location was just far enough from the square to afford some peace and quiet, although simple to get to just for an hour or two. Breakfasts were definitely a highlight, and their organic Moroccan dinners we really miss!

We would recommend this place for couples staying in Marrakech for a weekend (or a longer break). The staff are friendly, the rooms are gorgeous, sumptuously restrained! and the general atmosphere of the place seemed very confident. Whilst booking, we weren’t entirely sure of the location of this place, as other riads we looked at were the other side of the square, but once we arrived we found the location safe and easily get-to-able from the city’s best sights, restaurants and souks.
