Description
Ocean Vagabond’s owners Marie and Sebastien travelled extensively before creating Ocean Vagabond, a well-located guesthouse arranged between two floors of fourteen rooms decorated in a multi-ethnic fashion, following the individual styles of Africa, Ocean, India, Latin America, Indonesia, Morocco and Japan. The rooms vary in space, some with private balconies, each equipped with an en-suite bathroom, a twenty-inch LCD satellite television, telephone, safe and a view of either the ocean or the town.
Although constructed in a contemporary manner with curved walls and exposed staircase, Ocean Vagabond has embraced traditional Moroccan elements such as cedar-wood furniture, white marble and tadlakt (lime plaster) in the bathrooms. Whilst only the Massai, Pirogue and Jaipur rooms have air-conditioning, guests will find the sea-breeze lowers the temperature to comfortable levels.
Guests are invited to use the hotel’s indoor lounge areas, one of which has a mezzanine library and reading room, furnished with comfortable leather armchairs. The terrace allowing 360° views over the bay and town as well as offering a communal area for guests to enjoy. Meanwhile, Ocean Vagabond’s colonial style bar supplies a variety of alcoholic and soft drinks, and its restaurant serves a range of Mediterranean, Asian and French cuisine (even frogs legs are on the menu!). A children's menu is also available. Dinner is served overlooking the garden, whilst breakfast is a self-service buffet, and lunch consists of simple salads or sandwiches, both of which can be served outside around the pool.
Read MoreThe pool is surrounded by sun-loungers for guests’ use. The swimming pool is open to guests at any time but remains unguarded, and the water is heated by solar panels (in total 20% of the hotel’s energy is sourced in the same way). The hotel offers beauty therapies and massage outside in the Japanese garden at an additional cost. However the hotel’s hammam is free of charge, guests will only need to book a slot to enjoy this facility.
Ocean Vagabond can help guests make arrangements for their stay, ranging from restaurant bookings to water-sports and Atlas Mountain trekking. For guests celebrating a birthday, the hotel will provide a complimentary cake, and for those on their honeymoon, a massage (free of charge) is provided.
Where is it?

The Editor's Summary
Recent guests at Ocean Vagabond have provided positive reviews of their vacations. Certain guests have stated their time at Ocean Vagabond was “complete bliss” where the rooms have been described as “comfortable and nicely decorated”. However guests who have stayed in town-facing rooms have mentioned the traffic noise, and have recommended choosing a room with a sea-view. The “sumptuous” white marble used throughout the hotel, and the “high-level of cleanliness”, which must owe to the “attentive staff” at Ocean Vagabond, have also been commented upon. Guests who have sampled the “classy cuisine” at the in-house restaurant “highly recommend” it.
They’ve tried to balance style and tradition at Ocean Vagabond: The white marble used through the hotel is sumptuous, yet the curved walls seemed a little contrived for my taste. However the whole place has a very casual, airy feel to it, and its true- the place really doesn’t need air-con (atleast when we were there it didn’t). High points of the place were the high-level of cleanliness, attentive staff, homey restaurant serving up classy cuisine and the location which couldn’t be better. Low points of our stay here were that we felt the place slightly overpriced, and our choice of a room facing the medina wasn’t a particularly great one – sound of the ocean would have been much preferred to traffic noise.

My husband and I stayed here for two nights and it was complete bliss. We took an ocean view room which was comfortable and nicely decorated. We stayed for one dinner at the hotels restaurant, which we would highly recommend. We tried other places in town on subsequent nights but nothing matched Vagabond’s.. Outside, the facilities are impressive – the hammam, the garden, pool etc. The hotel is quite tightly arranged with fourteen rooms and public lounges but fortunately it wasn’t fully booked when we arrived, and the staff treated us like we were the only guests there!

Ocean Vagabond is a great choice for young couples. I came here with my boyfriend for three days and we had a great time. The location of the hotel is sooo perfect – 100m from the beach and 200 from town. We spent a lot of time wandering around the shops and lounging on the beach, but fortunately on the last day we took some time out to enjoy the hammam (such a bonus its free) and the pool. We didn’t use the restaurant as we were put off by breakfast – a self-service buffet, which wasn’t very inspiring, but I’m sure lunches and dinners wouldn’t have been on this level. We ate out at a restaurant on the shore, very friendly with an exciting menu. Overall our stay here was really vibrant and we’d love to come back with some confidence to try out the windsurfing they have in essaouira.
