Description

La Maison Arabe, originally the site of a popular Marrakech restaurant in the 1920's, has more recently been sympathetically renovated to become an authentic Moroccan guesthouse, whilst keeping its culinary associations by way of the Maison Arabe’s cookery school.

Bedrooms at La Maison Arabe are categorized into standard, junior and deluxe rooms and suites. Whichever room guests chose to stay in, they are provided with air-conditioning and en-suite facilities grafted from Moroccan marble and granite. Rooms also include satellite television, safe, mini-bar and hairdryer. Deluxe rooms benefit from a private balcony, terrace or patio whilst the Royal suites offer private terraces providing city views and a relaxing Jacuzzi. The rooms are individually decorated but are consistent with the Moroccan decor of the hotel as presented in the sumptuous lounge, bar and restaurant areas.

Food is important at La Maison Arabe. The hotel provides two restaurants both open to guests staying at the riad and visitors. “Le Restaurant” is highly decorated with a hand-painted zouaké (cedar-wood) ceiling, serving traditional Moroccan dishes as well as specialities prepared by Maison Arabe. Dinner is discreetly accompanied by lute and guitar music. If guests prefer something different, “Saveurs d'Ailleurs” is Maison Arabe’s second restaurant. A smaller restaurant, decorated in a colonial African style, this offer more international dishes such as asian-influenced tapas to a back-drop of music from Andalusian pianists. If guests or visitors take a liking to the cuisine served at La Maison Arabe, they are welcome to take cookery lessons with one of its Moroccan chefs and interpreter (English, Arabic, French), these being open to beginners as well as those with cooking experience.

La Maison Arabe provides ample relaxation facilities including an on-site hammam of traditional Moroccan steam baths, massages, facials and mud-baths. Many of the ingredients used in these treatments are produced in the hotel using local plants and minerals. Additionally Maison Arabe provides a swimming pool, gardens and Kasbah located out of the city for privacy and tranquillity, but easily accessible via a 15 minute drive with Maison Arabe’s free shuttle service. The Kasbah allows guests a shady spot to sit and read or admire the surrounding gardens. It’s also the perfect venue for a private reception or birthday party, which staff at the hotel can help to arrange. Here, a snack bar serving light refreshments and drinks is open to guests during the day and early evening. Back at the main hotel there are two patios, one featuring a cooling fountain and the other shaded with olive trees, both pleasantly filled with flowers and exotic plants.

Staff at Maison Arabe are usually happy to arrange transport such as taxis and car hire, as well as excursions and nearby activities such as golfing, tennis and camel-rides. Overall the hotel is well located just outside the main medina, reducing noise pollution but close enough for guests to walk into the city. A ten-minute walk from the hotel takes guests to the Marrakech’s main square and its range of shops, cafes and restaurants. The hotel is easily accessed by car so arriving guests can be taken straight to Maison Arabe’s doorstep by taxi.

Where is it?

La Maison Arabe is a 15-20 minute drive from Marrakesh airport. The riad is located near the Bab Doukkala mosque, a 10 minute walk from the city centre.

The Editor's Summary

open quoteRecent guests have commented favourably on La Maison Arabe. Some guests have recalled the “lavish” and “delicious” breakfasts as well as the “much-needed refreshment” of the complimentary afternoon tea. Whilst others have mentioned their disappointment at the cuisine served for dinner, as not coming up to their expectations. Similarly guests who tried the cookery lessons La Maison Arabe offer, found them to be over-priced though still enjoyable. The rooms have been described at “comfortable” as well as “very clean” but perhaps smaller than guests hoped for. The outside spaces such as pool and gardens have been praised for their “spacious layout” but guests have found it a disappointment that the roof terrace is only available to guests staying in certain suites, thus not a welcoming communal space. Overall guests have seemed to enjoy their stay at La Maison Arabe (reviews have stated plans to return) and have discovered the city due to the hotel’s useful location. close quote

April 2008

open quoteWe stayed in Maison Arabe for two nights as a get-away weekend in April. We are used to 4/5* hotels and so a smaller riad was a bit unusual for us. However we were pleasantly surprised but it. the staff there were very welcoming and served us some lovely meals, which although were not stunning were tasty, it was definitely an advantage not having to go out to eat late at night. my wife wanted to try the hammam so we both did so but neither of us were particularly impressed and the price of it didn’t seem to match the quality we were given. The hotel itself and its facilities were commendable but the actual content of it we weren’t so sure of. The pool we visited once (before the hammam later on) and we were disappointed with its size. We were also disappointed to find the suites only had access to the roof terrace so guests in other rooms (like ourselves) didn’t get a chance at the view. It’s a nice hotel and as I said the staff were lovely, but it wasn’t for us. close quote

March 2008

open quoteLa Maison Arabe seemed the perfect destination for us. We had travelled to Fez and were headed to Marrakech for the first time so we were a bit nervous but confidant from the good time we’d had in the fez. We stayed in one of the junior rooms as although the suites looked amazing, we wanted to save up for a couple of day trips. We liked the room though it was a bit smaller than we had expected. Generally though it was very comfortable and the bathroom was a good size. It was well decorated and very, very clean. We had dinner at the restaurant (the big one) and enjoyed it but it didn’t seem all that special. We ate out the following two nights as it was cheaper and had a bit more character. However the breakfasts were delicious!! We were amazed at how much food there was fresh pancakes, fruit, coffee, tea etc. it gave us a really good start to the day. Similarly the afternoon teas (which we managed to get to a couple of times) were a much-needed refreshment. In the end the day trip excursions we had saved up for were forgotten as we made use of the swimming pool and garden away from the hotel. They really are lovely and so private. The layout is quite spacious too so you don’t feel crowded by other guests using the facilities. It really felt-like we were having a real holiday for once. Apart from the pool we walked around the city at late afternoon/evening when it had cooled down. On the last day we took one of the hotel’s cookery lessons, it was fun to learn about the different spices and herbs and also to talk to the chef about the local area but it was still over-priced and I wouldn’t do it again. But generally tt was a great few days and ive been promised that we’ll return in the next three years – fingers crossed!close quote

open quoteAlthough it was chilly when we went to La Maison Arabe, the house was warm, and the welcome was too. The food we enjoyed and we spent most the weekend lazing around as the riad was fairly empty due to the season. It was very clean and nicely arranged. The service was impeccable. We'd like to come again and try more of the attractions around, especially the camel rides! close quote
