Description
Meryanne Loum-Martin designed and has built Jnane Tamsna in 2001. Her husband Gary Martin, a successful botanist, designed the gardens. The collaboration of these talents has created five beautiful villas set in nine acres of verdant garden featured in House and Garden magazine in the UK and Garden Design in the US. The location of Jnane Tamsna makes it perfect for peace and quiet, whilst also offering the opportunity to visit Marrakech’s city centre in only twenty minutes.
Each of the twenty-four bedrooms benefit from unique interior design thanks to Meryanne who has designed many of the objects that grace Jnane Tamsna. The Jnane main house is the largest of the villas and consists of four garden suites, three large, two standard and one small room. The Moussafir villa and Pavillion provide five and two garden suites respectively, each offering large amounts of space, comfortable salons, spacious bathrooms and access to the garden or a private veranda.
Two large rooms are located in Dar Ylane, five more are offered in Jnane Salmia. Due to this range in space and price Jnane Tamsna’s rooms receive solo travellers and couples for individual rooms and families or groups of friends who wish to rent villas exclusively. This flexibility allows Jnane Tamsna to be the perfect venue for special occasions such as weddings, reunions or birthdays.
Date palms planted centuries ago are colourfully surrounded with olive trees and fruit trees, as well as rose-bushes and bougainvilleas planted in 2001. In turn some of these plants help to produce the beautiful flower arrangements dotted throughout the house. The grounds are home to exotic birds, turtles, the occasional hedgehog and a friendly dog. Additionally, the gardens include Jnane Tamsna’s organic herb and vegetable plots, which source many of the traditional ingredients the house kitchen uses for Mediterranean and Moroccan styled dishes.
Read MoreAccording to season and weather, the house offers numerous outdoor dining areas in the gardens or beside the pools although the restaurant provides an indoor alternative. Breakfast is a buffet of fruit juices and fruit salads, pancakes and Moroccan specialities with homemade jams and honeys. Eggs and cheeses are also available as is bacon on request. Lunches are split into light meals and full meals according to appetite and budget, however Jnane Tamsna’s candlelit dinners remain a romantic three-course affair including wine.
Three large salons welcome guests to socialise or browse the library of English and French books. Whilst the rooms do not include individual televisions, a TV screen and DVD player are available upon request. However, the possibility of entertainment at Jnane Tamsna is rich; not only are there five swimming pools and one tennis court, allowing families with young children to enjoy themselves but the guesthouse is unique in offering an on-site art gallery with regular exhibitions by foreign and local artists inspired by the Moroccan landscape. Furthermore Jnane Tamsna is dedicated to delivering workshops to both adults and children on botanics and cookery. A wellness workshop is also offered, allowing guests to taste different types of relaxation therapies if they haven’t already taken advantage of the massage treatments on first arrival.

The Editor's Summary
Guests who have reviewed Jnane Tamsna have commented on the “great hosts” and staff who create a “warm and welcoming” atmosphere, which, in turn creates a house that “couldn’t be further from the chain-hotels you get in cities”, but is dedicated to being “a home from home, and a very beautiful home at that!” The estate has been described as having an “idyllic”, “retreat-like environment” due to its “tranquillity” and space. “The arrangement of villas, gardens and dining places” ensures privacy and quietude, and whilst Jnane Tamsna is “far enough away” from the “whirlwind city”, the location allows guests the opportunity to pop back for an afternoon.
We had been staying in an inner-city hotel near the medina and for the last remaining days of our break we really hoped for a proper holiday – relaxation, massages, sunbathing, a pool, comfortable rooms and good food! We weren’t disappointed. Jnane Tamsna delivered on all of these things and more! It really is an oasis of calm, far enough away from the city centre to feel quiet and safe, but close enough if you fancy popping back for an afternoon. The staff are friendly and the general atmosphere of the place was warm and welcoming. The restaurant service was top notch. Although some might be put off by a buffet breakfast, we really enjoyed it, it was fresh, tasty and arranged nicely each morning. We ate all our meals in the house and enjoyed each one as much as the last. The only factor we thought they could improve was the choice of wines, which seemed a bit limited. However all in all we really loved this place - the lack of television and telephones suited the retreat-like environment and its tranquility, its commitment to eco-friendly tourism and maintenance of the extensive grounds make it idyllic, and we’d certainly recommend the massage/hammam treatments on offer – divine! It has to be the perfect relaxation break after a few days in the whirlwind city of Marrakech.

Jnane Tamsna is a special guesthouse, it couldn’t be further from the chain-hotels you get in cities, but has been set up to be a home from home, and a very beautiful home at that! Meryanne and Gary make great hosts and the staff exude a friendly yet relaxed manner. Although the prices look high, we definitely thought we got what we paid for. We chose one of the garden rooms, it was very spacious, cool and opened onto the myriad of trees plants and shrubs outside. When we arrived the house was quite busy with guests, so our only complaint is although there are several pools to choose from, they are all rather small and can get quite crowded quite quickly! But the arrangement of villas, gardens and dining places means there is generally a lot of space and noise is definitely not a problem.
