Description

Past the bustling souks and through the winding streets, Dar Housnia is located near Place El Moukef, north-east of the medina. The riad was bought in 2001 and renovated over four years to create an elegant guesthouse offering a rare space of peace and quiet in the city of Marrakech.

Owned by four friends, who spend their time between Morocco and Belgium, Dar Housnia has been styled harmoniously in French and Arab-Andalusian designs. Whilst the architectural renovation kept the spirit of a traditional Moroccan riad, the interiors are painted in pastel colours with simple cotton drapes and comfortable furnishings. These rooms exhibit a range of decorative objects found in the local souks and antique stores.

Dar Housnia’s riad wraps itself around a patio shaded with palm trees and offers four junior suites, all en-suite with private living rooms. Alternatively, Dar Housnia provides the Douiria, a separate apartment containing two rooms, large sitting room with open hearth, and terrace of its own. This makes Dar Housnia a perfect choice for solo travellers and couples looking to spend a few nights in Marrakech, and also groups of friends who can book the apartment in exclusivity. Dar Housnia takes its peace and quiet very seriously, which is why bookings that include children under ten years old are usually avoided, however family groups are very welcome to make an exclusive booking of the guesthouse.

Dar Housnia’s living rooms welcome guests indoors with open hearths, a range of guidebooks on Morocco, maps, CDs, DVDs and a small gift shop selling Moroccan arts and crafts as well as jewellery, local oils and lotions, or outdoors where the b’hou on the patio or pergola on the Douiria’s roof terrace provide shady comfortable spots. Meals can be served indoors in lounge areas or in either of the two dining rooms, or outside in warmer weather. Dar Housnia serves a mix of Moroccan and French cuisine using fresh local produce only with an emphasis on seasonal ingredients rather than tinned or imported foods.

Dar Housnia’s private swimming pool, unusual for inner-city riads such as this, provides a refreshing treat for guests, as does the hammam offering steam baths, massages and other beauty treatments upon request.

Dar Housnia’s staff are golf enthusiasts making the guesthouse a useful choice for golfers looking to experience the sport in Marrakech. Not only does the guesthouse provide golf equipment but are on hand to recommend the local courses and arrange appropriate transfers. The guesthouse is also able to host special events such as anniversaries, birthdays and have known to provide a bottle of champagne for honeymooners staying in the guesthouse.  Although the city is on the doorstep of Dar Housnia, the housekeeper is able to arrange cultural excursions around Marrakech with a guide for guests, as well as other bookings such as car hire.

Where is it?

Dar Housnia is located 15 minutes walk away from the main square in Marrakech, a 20 minute drive from Marrakech airport but as taxis are unable to access the road which Dar Housnia is in, guests will have a short walk from Place El Moukef.

open quoteTwo nights in the Mogador suite made us fall in love with this riad. From its calm, understated interiors, to its staff; respectful of your privacy and always willing to please. The unexpected pool and hammam are brilliant additions to Dar Housnia, I enjoyed a massage and steam bath on the last day. The only stress guests may encounter here is finding the place – can be a little tricky from the medina but other than that, I urge you to visit! close quote

open quoteWe stayed at Dar Housnia for three nights on a mini-break from London. It was a totally refreshing experience seeing as we hadn’t tried Morocco before. Marrakech is a fast-paced location, which we soon found out, so it was great to be able to close the door on it when we got back to our room. We chose the Fez suite because of its lower price, as far as we could tell it was more or less the same as the other rooms – it was comfortable, clean and spacious enough for two. Apart from breakfast, we had meals out as we wanted to explore as much of the city and culture as possible in so little time, but going on breakfast, I’d imagine the lunches and dinners to be well cooked and served with courtesy as we experienced. Overall, the place may seem a bit pricey but we thought it was well worth it.close quote
