Description
Dar Baraka is a small and simple riad located in Rabat on Morocco's Atlantic seabord coast, overhangs the naturally cooling estuary of the Bou Regreg. Originally built by French owners in the 1920s, Dar Baraka is an understated yet elegant house offering the intimacy of only two rooms, both rooms being light and breezy with original artwork and antique furnishings. The bathroom in the spacious double has retained its ivory tiling and the original bath with 1950s fittings while the compact twin combines white Italian marble with traditional zellij (or mosaic), and has a beautiful terrace opening to the split-level garden.
The hotel’s casual yet comfortable environment includes room service and a TV/DVD room. There are two separate terraces to relax on outside and both rooms have pleasing views out on to the water. The rooms of Baraka can be booked separately or together which is a good option for families.
Original features such as traditional Moroccan zellijs and ivory tiling from the 1950's bridge the development from private house to guesthouse. The owner of Dar Baraka, Pauline, has run an art gallery in Rabat for over twenty years and this has influenced the decorative style in the rooms. The hotel does not have air conditioning yet both rooms can be described as light and breezy and has the ability to take on a whole family’s visit or to be a great retreat for couples or artists looking for a few nights in a less high-paced Moroccan location.
Read MoreThe simplicity of this hotel is complemented by the traditional Moroccan meals made from fresh local produce, served in the hotel’s dining room. Delicious lunches and dinners can be taken here or on one of the two terraces. The first of these is an andaluscian terrace of citrus trees and bougainvillea looking out to the river and across to Sale. A second terrace is shaded by ancient fig trees and also has impressive views. Underneath the house is a vaulted cellar where you can see cannonballs, a reminder of the city's turbulent history with overseas invaders. The owner Pauline or any of her small team of staff are on hand through the day and night and will assist with shopping excursions and other arrangements of activities.
Restaurants and cafes located in the nearby medina, along with a variety of boutiques selling hand-made items from the area, are only a short walk from Dar Baraka. Similarly, the coast and other attractions such as the Museum of Oudaias, a collection of traditional Moroccan arts and crafts, are within easy reach. If venturing a little further a field to the outskirts of Rabat, then Chellah proves to be a worthwhile archaeological museum with Roman and Arabic ruins.

User Reviews on Dar Baraka
Below you'll find reviews written by our users, that have stayed in this hotel. The reviews are vetted and verified by us and may have been summarised by our editor to give you a meaningful summary.
The Editor's Summary
Dar Baraka as recent reviews suggest, is a "comfortable and informal" hotel on the Atlantic Coast. Its simple yet traditional decor in the rooms makes guests feel "at home" in a relaxed setting.
Meals at the riad have been rated by guests, which comes as no surprise as they are freshly prepared to meet standard, vegetarian and dietary requests.
Guests have commented that the overall setting may not fulfill all traveler's expectations. Some young families or couples may look for a location offering more variety in activities and entertainment. But it is clear that Dar Baraka comes as a "wecome relief" from the busier areas of Morocco.

This was a lovely little riad for a couple of nights on our way to Fes. It was comfortable and informal. This was the first time I had visited Morocco and being vegetarian I was concerned it would be a problem, but he food was really good and open to suggestion as it was all prepared freshly. The surrounding area was quiet (perhaps too quiet for me as I'm an energetic and impatient person wanting to see and do 24/7!) but good for those wanting to take a break by the ocean.

When I booked a four-night stay at Dar Baraka in June I was worried that the location might have been too sedate, but it turned out to be a welcome relief from the madness of my trip to Marrakech earlier in the month! I had also expected that the area would not offer a lot to do in terms of day-trips and outings but I was also proved wrong - I spent a lot of my time on the coast and wondering around the small cafes and boutiques nearby.
I also felt really at home in my room. It wasn't overly done up in traditional Moroccan ware and was cool even though there was no air conditioning. I had several meals in the riad, and enjoyed all of them.
If you want a more casual riad in a laid-back, yet beautiful environment I would recommend Dar Baraka. As it says here the name Dar Baraka means luck, and I felt lucky to have chosen this riad for my visit.
