Description
Purchased in 2007 for its panoramic views of the medina, Dar 47 underwent a year of restoration before owners Michael and Emma Crane opened its doors. The house offers exclusive rental from two to nine people, with a minimum of a two-day stay. Located near the centre of Fez, guests can expect a short drive to the city centre and places of interest, or slightly longer walks.
There are five bedrooms in Dar 47, two of which are en-suite and are located on the first floor. Both of these have shower rooms, excellent medina views and air-conditioning. Additionally, Bedroom One has a king-size four-poster iron bed and fireplace, whilst Bedroom 2 benefits from a dressing area. The three other bedrooms are located on the first and ground floors of Dar 47, these do not have air-conditioning. The rooms differ from being a double (four-poster), twin and single room although all have shared shower rooms. The range of rooms in Dar 47 makes the house a good choice for couples travelling together, family groups or groups of friends. Several windows and white, cream or beige walls create a light, airy environment. Furthermore, the monochromatic furnishings and minimal use of traditional Moroccan patterns provide a refreshing simplicity.
Two terraces in Dar 47 provide two very different spaces. The front terrace is a good place for guests to sunbathe with sun loungers, parasols, tables and chairs (for four only) and a “rainforest” shower to cool off in. This terrace benefits from a high position allowing an expansive view over the medina. Surrounding the terrace are jasmine plants, palms and cacti. The rear terrace on the other hand becomes an al-fresco venue. A built-in barbeque, dining table and lounging chairs adjoins to a terrace kitchen which is fully equipped for guests to use. A second kitchen is located indoors off the courtyard on the ground floor. The living room nearby seats up to ten for meals and includes a fireplace (stocked with firewood for cooler weather). This room also offers a television, library of DVDs (including English films), novels and several board games. The courtyard outside allows a further place to sit and even an i-pod docking station.
Although Dar 47 is generally thought a self-catering accommodation choice, the live-in housekeeper provides breakfast and daily cleaning. Additionally, guests can request lunch and dinner for a supplementary cost. Meals are likely to consist of traditional Moroccan food and ingredients come fresh from a large fruit and vegetable market a minute’s walk from the house.
Airport transfers, day-trips and restaurant recommendations can be arranged in advance. Advice can also be sought from the house manager Abdou. However a “comprehensive” information pack is available in Dar 47 with guides and maps that guests can borrow for the duration of their stay.
Where is it?
Dar 47 is a 25 minute drive from the local Fez airport and a 5 minute drive from the city centre - a route which can also be walked. On arrival guests will be met by the house manager beside Bab Guissa (a nearby 12th century gate) and taken to the house personally.

The information pack in the house has also “helped with ideas to what to do”. The live-in housekeeper has been “very friendly” to guests and served “excellently cooked” meals. On the other hand, the kitchen has been described as “well-stocked” for guests desiring to self-cater. Guests have welcomed the “clean and comfortable” rooms in Dar 47 and the “terrace with excellent views around”. The "short walk" from local attractions has been a benefit to guests interested in exploring “the back streets” of the “real Fez”.
Good location and exclusive rental gives you much more control over your holiday rather than days been planned for you. Where necessary the information pack in the house helped with ideas on what to do. Very clean and comfortable rooms and kitchen was well stocked for making a range of meals. Would recommend to families (with young children too) and couples.

We really enjoyed our five days at Dar 47. Arriving late afternoon we made sure to request dinner in advance. This was a good idea as it was excellently cooked and was a great initiation into Morocco! We would have loved to request more meals like this but to keep costs down we bought from local markets instead. The jhousekeeper (who cooks) was very friendly, though didn’t speak much English. We felt at home and enjoyed some bbqs on the terrace with excellent views around. The short walk from the local attractions was really interesting as well, as it brought us much closer to the real Fez as we saw all the back streets.
