Description
Chez Rebecca is a self-catering apartment on the third floor of a house in Essaouira’s historically listed medina. The house itself is round 150 years old and was turned into apartments in 2003, then renovated in 2008 by four English friends and managed by a Moroccan team of staff. Its location is central, with food souks on the doorstep, and the beach only a ten minute walk away.
As a self-catering option, Chez Rebecca includes a fully-equipped kitchen, spacious living room and dining area. The apartment has two small bedrooms with interconnecting doors. One room provides a double bed, whilst the other has twin beds. Chez Rebecca is decorated in Essaouira’s traditional blues and whites creating a casual, clean and Mediterranean environment. However the unglazed terracotta floor tiles, mosaics and “tadelakt” plaster in the bathroom bring the Moroccan location back into view. The rooms are unusually light and airy due to the coastal location and to the height of the third floor.
A basic television, music system and Wi-Fi internet are supplied but the two outdoor terraces are more likely to distract visitors. A sheltered private terrace is a good place to sunbathe in the morning and to eat when it becomes shady later in the day. However there is a second alternative on the next floor, a larger terrace shared with two other apartments (a good excuse to socialise!), which is supplied with a barbeque and, not least, excellent views of the Atlantic Ocean.
Read MoreGuests wishing to cater for themselves at Chez Rebecca will find a range of food souks nearby supplying fresh local ingredients. However guests may find it easier to order anything from breakfast to dinner into the apartment from local caterers of which their are many. Additionally reasonably priced restaurants and cafes are only a short walk away, presenting Essaouira’s famously fresh seafood amongst other dishes.
Essaouira is a good location for travellers wishing to recharge their batteries or for guests wanting to take advantage of the coastal location. Its various watersports are accessible at amateur or more experienced level. Chez Rebecca’s manager can arrange surf lessons and is will also be happy to arrange restaurant, travel or transfer bookings. If guests would prefer to explore Essaouira alone, horse and camel rides are a thirty-minute walk away whilst bird-watching at the estuary is a little further. Several hammam spa differing in style are also within walking distance, as are three hotel swimming pools that welcome Chez Rebecca's guest.
Where is it?
Chez Rebecca is a 20 minute drive from Essaouira's aiport or a 2.5 hour drive from the airport in Marrakesh. Around Essaouira the beach and centre are within a 20 minute walk.

The Editor's Summary
Chez Rebecca appears, from recent reviews, to be a good choice for couples and small families alike. As a self-catering apartment guests have mentioned their satisfaction with Chez Rebecca’s “well-equipped and well laid-out kitchen” and also the nearby restaurants selling a range of cuisine at “reasonable prices”. Guests have enjoyed the location of the apartment being within “walking distance to everything” around Essaouira. The staff have also been complimented by recent guests, viewing them as “very helpful”. Chez Rebecca seems to have had guests wishing to return to enjoy again the “cool and spacious” rooms that the apartment offers.
My wife and I booked a week in this apartment. The spring before we had visited Marrakesh: we enjoyed it but reckoned it was for a younger market, nonetheless we felt drawn back to explore some more of Morocco. We decided on Essaouira because of its coastal location, from our research it appeared to be a calmer, friendlier option to have a proper holiday where we didn’t feel like having a break after we got back home! It turned out to be a good choice. The apartment wasn’t too fancy but was definitely comfortable and had some nice bits like the terrace where we had our breakfasts in the sun. The twin room was left empty (as we used the double) so we used it as a dressing room which was pleasant. Some evenings we got a bit fed up with the noise coming from outside but it was nothing that a pair of earplugs couldn’t solve. As for the coast, it was perfect, my wife enjoyed sitting in the sun watching the surfers and one day I managed to persuade her to come with me to do some bird-watching, which in actual fact we both enjoyed. All said and done we had a brilliant holiday and would choose this over the busy busy Marrakesh any day

I spent a long time looking for a self-catering apartment suitable for myself, my partner and teenage son and then I found Chez Rebecca. It was everything we had hoped for. The English owners were very helpful and seemed to know what they were doing. We met the Moroccan manager and luckily he was very accommodating, answered all our questions and spoke very good English.
The bedrooms were clean, cool and spacious, the terraces were also nice spaces and the location was within walking distance to everything. We chose self-catering because my son is vegetarian and none of us are fans of spicy food and we thought this might be safer. We mostly bought food from the local markets and were pleased to find the kitchen well-equipped and well laid out for cooking. However this did take up quite a bit of time and for the last night we ventured out to a restaurant about 15 minutes walk away. We were nicely surprised at the dishes we could chose from, and their very reasonable prices, and started to wonder whether a self-catering apartment was right for us after all. Overall Chez Rebecca was a lovely place, perfect for a family break, and if we ever find ourselves heading to Essaouira again I expect we’ll come back here.
