Description
Guests to Riad Chems Bleu benefit from the best of both worlds in the riad being situated in the heart of Essaouira with panoramic views over the Atlantic ocean. Yet, equally, it is a modest guesthouse run by staff with a strong "whatever it takes to make the guest happy" attitude. Five guestrooms, a dining room, lounge, small garden and open roof terrace make this townhouse a perfect choice for travellers wanting a simple yet refreshing break from city-life.
The first floor of Riad Chems Bleu is comprised of two rooms “la bleue” and “la rouge”, so called because of their colourful decoration. The second floor follows suit with “la ocre” and “la verte” boasting sea-views, and finally “la dunette” is situated on the third floor. Whilst most of the rooms offer double beds, “la rouge” is somewhat special: its spacious size and king-size bed provide an element of luxury and a staircase takes guests up to a separate, smaller room offering a single bed (“la bleue” also offers a separate single room). “La dunette” is also considered unique due to its recent construction, complete with private terrace and living-room area.
Berber styled furniture decorates the rooms including the riad's main lounge. The dining room fitted with fireplace looks out over the courtyard garden, however guests are encouraged to take breakfast on the roof terrace overlooking the coast. If guests request lunch and/or dinner, Riad Chems Bleu’s staff will gather fresh ingredients from the local markets on the day for the chosen dish.
The small garden provides a verdant spot filled with various small trees and plants, chosen specifically for their colour. Above, the roof terraces on the second and third floors provide deckchairs for sunbathers and are conveniently located out of the wind.
Although Riad Chems Bleu offers no in-house spa, a sauna and hammam are available next door to the guesthouse, and moreover, massage can be organised within guests’ rooms. Similarly, staff can advice guests on swimming pools in the area if preferred over the sea. On the beach, kite-surfing, surfing and sailing activities are available, whilst the dunes provide exciting and exotic experiences such as quad-biking and horse or camel riding. Additionally, Essaouira's town full of souks, cafes and restaurants is a charming location to explore.
Where is it?
Riad Chems Bleu is 15 minutes from Essaouira airport by car, only 2 minutes walk from the town, and 5 minutes from the beach.

The Editor's Summary
Riad Chems Bleu has been reviewed by recent guests who have enjoyed the traditional, “homely guesthouse” with “clean and comfortable” rooms decorated in “fresh, subtle colours” illuminated by “large windows” and “high ceilings”, some of which look over the Atlantic ocean. The staff have been described as offering a “friendly and professional” service advising guests on transport and activities to do around the “traditional town and beaches” of Essaouira. Additionally the meals are made “with real attention and enthusiasm” and served by the “helpful and kind” staff in the “cosy dining room”. Riad Chems Bleu is “a world away” from alternative city locations, and guests have stated their interest in returning.
After staying in Morocco on two separate occasions (Marrakech and a year later Fez), we wanted a break by the sea to compare our experiences. Essaouira looked popular from the research we did, but it also seemed to have retained its traditional town and beaches, rather than playing to tourists. We chose Riad Chems Bleu for similar reasons. We weren’t in the least disappointed, the riad is a homely guesthouse, the small selection of staff that helped us were incredibly friendly and professional, and advised us on activities for the day ahead whilst we ate breakfast on the terrace overlooking the broad atlantic ocean. We really couldn’t have chosen better, staying here was a world away from the city locations we had been to before. Fresh, subtle colours and large windows illuminate the rooms at Chems Bleu and the one dinner we requested on our last night was made with real attention and enthusiasm, served in the cosy dining room. We cant wait to explore some more coastal towns and villages around Morocco and only hope we can find somewhere as good as this riad to stay in!

This is a lovely guesthouse, high ceilings create a lofty, cool environment and the room we stayed in was quite basic but clean and comfortable and served us very well for the three nights we booked. The staff are helpful and kind and arranged transfers from Essaouira airport for us. We’d love to come again.
