Description
“CaravanSerai” is a Persian word meaning “roadside inn” and the location of this Caravenserai was just that – a stopping place for merchants traveling into Marrakech to sell their wares. But today, designed by famous architect Charles Boccara, CaravanSerai is a boutique hotel offering seventeen stylish rooms in the tranquil northern Marrakech region of La Palmeraie. This dynamic between the past and present is embodied in the thick pisé (mud-brick) walls that enclose CaravanSerai from the surrounding palm groves. Inside, a large pool (encircled with elegant lanterns at night) dominates the courtyard, on to which all of the hotel rooms face.
Winding passageways and twisting staircases lead guests to their rooms and suites. CaravanSerai offers deluxe rooms, junior, deluxe, superior and master suites, allowing guests to choose their room according to budget and requirement. For instance, the deluxe rooms have private terraces whilst the suite does not, but benefits from being slightly larger. The master suites include all of this with extra space and a private plunge-pool. All rooms are air-conditioned and en-suite, including basics such as hairdryers, towels, mini-bar. However, the decoration of these rooms is far from basic, and guests can expect rooms painted in pinks, ochres and whites with rustic ceilings made from the trunks of eucalyptus and palm-trees. The en-suite bathrooms are plastered in traditional green tadelakt and include a large bath made from polished limestone, in which a special floral bath can be prepared.
Read MoreCaravanSerai’s in-house restaurant is called Route des Epices and serves healthy International and Moroccan food for breakfast, lunch and dinner, using fresh, local ingredients. Breakfast and lunch are presented as buffets (with a big variety of food on offer) served inside the restaurant or beside the pool, whilst guests will order from a menu for dinner.
During the day, guests can sunbathe or lounge in the shade on beds and under parasols arranged in CaravanSerai’s lawned gardens. The gardens are fairly extensive but remain private and sheltered due to the high mud-brick walls. The Jacaranda trees and various flowering plants, as well as the birds, tortoises and odd house-cat make a relaxing spot for guests. The hammam also provides an added luxury, as do the other therapies (such as massage) available. The salons inside the hotel provide an informal space in which guests can watch television, read a book or use the billiards table.
The area in which CaravanSerai is located is home also to a small Berber village. Guests can explore the village and its area and find local activities including camel and horse-riding, as well as a golf course. If guests wish to visit Marrakech’s city centre, Caravanserai’s thoughtful minibus runs there three times a day and takes only fifteen minutes. Additionally, taxis can be arranged via the hotel staff at any time.

The Editor's Summary
CaravanSerai has received warm reviews from recent guests who have been “enchanted” by the “rustic retreat”. The “intricacies” of the hotel, such as the “alcoves and twisty staircases” have charmed guests alongside the more obvious attractions of “gardens, pool and hammam”. Rooms as CaravanSerai have been enjoyed for being “comfortable” and “cool” as well as quiet due to the “peaceful” surroundings of the Palmeraie. The breakfast and lunch buffets have received positive commentd for their size and “varied” dishes, but dinner has been described as less imaginative.
Loved it here; very impressed by its general outward appearance - the courtyard really does look this majestic! and also by the decor and attention to detail in the suite we had. Lounging around CaravanSerai made the ideal relaxation break, but when we fancied some culture we popped into town on the minibus and had a look at the medina, souks and a couple of museums. Great for a relaxed weekend break!!

My girlfriend and I stayed at Caravanserai for four days in april. It was great – the first two days after arriving we didn’t even leave the hotel because we were so enchanted by it. the gardens, pool and hammam make it brilliant for a rustic retreat. In the last two days however we took advantage of the shuttle bus and explored the city. As it was our second trip to Marrakech we weren’t as desperate to see everything so took it at our own pace, which made for a relaxing trip. The staff back at the hotel were always around and ready to take care of you. The buffets they arranged were large and varied but dinner didn’t change much which is why we ate out twice, finding it cheaper and generally a bit more imaginative. But overall we loved it. We’d recommend caravaserai for couples looking for an upmarket, romantic break.

CaravanSerai is set in the palm groves of Marrakech but we were a bit surprised on arrival to be dropped off amongst concrete buildings, some of them dilapidated… despite this, the hotel is still stunning – high, thick walls envelop a royal-looking courtyard with quite a large pool. We loved the intricacies of the place – alcoves and twisty staircases. But our room with private terrace was probably the highlight, it was comfortable, cool and everything we’d hoped for. ALSO- the thick walls of the building make for brilliant sound insulation but this isn’t really necessary as the surrounding area is so peaceful anyway!

Caravanserai is a hip/shabby-chic hotel with real character. We'd love to come back here. The staff were great and gave us some advice on what to see when we travelled into Marrakech twice over the four days we were staying. Our only slight complaint was the dinners we opted for at the hotel. We'd hoped for more choice and we also slightly disappointed by the high prices. Despite this, lunches were great - large buffets with plenty to eat and that goes for breakfasts too - yummy! Facilities were impressive with pools, spaciously arranged gardens and a hammam we tried and loved!
