Hotel of the Week: Riad Dar Sbihi
If you’re looking for a relaxing break a stone’s throw from Marrakech’s medina, Riad Dar Sbihi could be the one for you.
Hotel: Riad Dar Sbihi
Address: 25, Derb Taht El-Khochba, Zaouia El-Abbassia
Rating: ***
Riad Dar Sbihi sits to the north of Marrakech’s medina, away from the hustle and bustle of city life but just 15 minutes walk from the souks and main square.
Owners Sibylle and Saad Sbihi live in the riad full time, meaning they can always give advice and information to travellers and are more than happy to share their expert knowledge of Marrakech and surrounding area.
Dar Sbihi is a classically designed riad with four arcades giving access to all the rooms. Inside, the riad has been decorated by local craftsmen with Fes-style sculpted plaster, furniture carved from cedar wood and coloured glass windows surrounded by prettily patterned curtains.
This is a large riad, with five standard rooms, three mini suites and two large suites. One of the suites has its own private terrace.
The bathrooms are tiled in a traditional Moroccan style but are European in style. A real treat is contained within, as shower gels, soaps and other toiletries made locally using the famous Moroccan argan oil are on hand for guests to use.
Home made toiletries are also used in the marble hammam, where body scrubs and massages are on offer.
Breakfast is included in the price of your stay and there are also options for lunch and dinner, serving a range of traditional Moroccan cuisine. Mint tea and a selection of pastries are also available.
Indoors, there are two lounges in which to relax, also doubling up as a restaurant in the unlikely event that bad weather prevents eating in the courtyards.
The courtyard itself is beautiful and relaxing with a huge variety of fauna, including peach, banana and lime trees. A fountain filled with fresh flowers provides a central focal point.
Riad Dar Sbihi’s four terraces enable guests to view the Atlas Mountains and nearby sanctuary of Sidi Bel-Abbes. There’s a sun deck on one terrace to soak up the rays, and inside the Douiria (‘small house’) is a small swimming pool for guests to cool down in during the day.
If you’re planning an energetic holiday, there are bikes available for hire, and you can also explore the surrounding area on camel back or quad bike, go horse riding or take a flight in a hot air balloon. All in all, a hotel with something for everyone.

Relax in four-star luxury in our newest Marrakech hotel
Here at Morocco Gateway, we’re always on the hunt for new hotels where we can offer some great discounts on visiting Morocco.
That’s why we’re pleased to welcome Dar Zemora, a Marrakech riad with a four star rating, to the Morocco Gateway family. Read on to discover this little bit of luxury just a short drive from the heart of the city.
Dar Zemora was bought by its English owners in 2001 and opened its doors as a hotel in 2003. It comprises the large main house and the smaller Pavilliion Suite, which has two bedrooms and a private pool – ideal for a small group or pair of couples.
The decoration of all the bedrooms maintains a traditional Moroccan style, each unique with painted zouak ceilings, moucharabieh woodwork and tadalkt walls. There are also a selection of reception rooms – the Casablanca Room is relaxed and informal, the Omar Room cosy and perfect for couples. There’s also the Fan Room, with traditional floor seating, where guests can order drinks.
For entertainment, there is a library with books and board games such as backgammon and chess available, along with playing cards. Although there are no televisions in the bedrooms to help maintain the riad’s peaceful atmosphere, there are portable DVD players and even iPods available to borrow.
Meals are a particular highlight at Dar Zemora; Ahmina, one of the chefs, hosts taste test nights four times a week, and as Dar Zemora has its own herb and vegetable gardens there are always plenty of fresh ingredients available.
For relaxation, guests can walk through the herb garden to the treatment room, where beauty treatments including manicure and hammam are available. There’s also a croquet lawn and large swimming pool surrounded by sun loungers.
Perfectly distanced from Marrakech to give a real sense of retreat but close enough for an easy visit, Dar Zemora is a haven of relaxation. If you feel like being adventurous, staff can also help arrange trips for such things as camel or horse riding, golf and tennis.

Hotel of the week: Riad Bahia
Travelling as a family or group of friends, there’s nothing nicer than having a hotel or riad that’s exclusive to your party for the duration of your stay. If you are visiting Morocco as part of a group, chances are you’ll be searching for Moroccan riads and hotels of a smaller, more intimate nature. One that we can highly recommend is Riad Bahia, situated in Meknes.
Hotel: Riad Bahia
Region: Meknes, Fez
Address: Tiberbarine, Ancienne Médina,
Rating: **
Riad Bahia was a family house for four generations before being converted into a riad in 2003. Designed around the traditional internal courtyard, Bahia has four bedrooms on the upper floors.
You can chose from standard double or twin rooms and more spacious mini suites. The rooms face either the courtyard or the street, and it’s worth bearing in mind there can be some noise from the street.
Meknes, in the Fez region of Morocco, has many attractions, all of which are in walking distance of Riad Bahia.
Bahia is located behind the museum Dar Jamaï of Moroccan decorative arts and there are also hammams and swimming pools close by. Babal Mansour (town walls) is another popular attractions in the vicinity.
In addition, staff can arrange excursions to the Atlas Mountains, cider forest, archaeological site Volubilis and the coast.
Facilities within the riad include a courtyard that includes plenty of shaded areas, as well as a roof terrace for sunbathing. Inside there are lounges with satellite television and a small library that guests can use.
The restaurant serves lunch and dinner, all made from fresh ingredients found in the local medina. Vegetarian meals are available although regrettably other specific dietary requirements cannot be catered for. Riad Bahia does not serve any alcohol but there are delicious fruit cocktails available, along with the ubiquitous mint tea.
Riad Bahia is an environmentally conscious establishment – plants are specifically chosen to defend the riad from insects instead of using pesticides, natural fertiliser is used to grow them, and baskets are used for shopping instead of plastic bags.
Morocco Gateway can offer you special rates for your stay at Riad Bahia. Just follow the link to make a booking or enquiry.
We also have information on a wide range of Moroccan riads and hotels, including exclusive discounts.
Hotel of the Week: Lalla Mira
If you’re a bit of an eco warrior, or even just an eco enthusiast, finding an exotic holiday destination that meets your green credentials can sometimes be a bit of challenge. That’s why, for this week’s Moroccan riad of the week we look at Morocco’s first ‘Bio hotel’ – an Essaouria haven for green travellers.
Hotel: Lalla Mira
Region: Essaouira
Address: 14 rue d’Algérie, 44000 Essaouira Medina
Rating: **
Although Lalla Mira is a new hotel by Essaouira’s standards, being built in 2002, it incorporates the oldest bath house in the city.
Sustainable development is the focus of this riad, which serves organic local produce in its restaurant and dresses its beds in organic bed linen. The underfloor heating inside the hotel comes from solar power and much of the fruit and vegetables served are grown by the hotel itself.
The hotel’s owners want their guests to have an authentic Moroccan experience, without missing out on any comfort.
There are 13 rooms in total, from single rooms to large suites. meaning that there’s something to suit all budgets. Because of the location on the Atlantic coast, the rooms don’t have air conditioning, as the natural cool air from the sea keeps them at an ambient temperature.
There is a wide range of vegetarian cuisine available in the restaurant, and for this reason it is popular with vegetarian travellers. For those who enjoy seafood, fish served in the restaurant is freshly caught from the Atlantic. There are also several quality restaurants and cafes on the nearby harbour that are well worth a visit.
The town centre location of Lalla Mira makes it ideal for older travellers and those not keen to do too much walking. It’s only a short trip to the city walls and the Blue Flag certified beach.
Lalla Mira’s staff can also arrange trips to Marrakesh, the Atlas mountains and the desert. For something a little different, the hotel manager can even arrange a marriage service for guests, so long as they inform the hotel at least a month in advance.
Hotel of the Week: Riad Dar Ilham
Wouldn’t it be lovely to get away from the stresses and strains of working life and enjoy some proper relaxation? We certainly think so and the idea of being pampered in a luxurious Moroccan riad sounds like our idea of perfection. That’s why, for this week’s hotel of the week, we’ve chosen Riad Dar Ilham, a modern riad in Marrakech.
Hotel: Riad Dar Ilham

Hotel of the Week – Dar Azawad
For many Europeans, the desert is something hard to imagine – of course you’ve seen the movies and the pictures, yet still it’s hard to conjure up the atmosphere; the smells, the heat, the sheer vastness of it all. Visiting the Sahara is an experience everyone should have, which is why this week we explore a Moroccan riad located on the edge of the desert, with a choice of accommodation including authentic mud huts.
Hotel: Dar Azawad
Region: Zagora, Beyond Atlas
Address: Douar Ouled Driss BP16, M’hamid, Zagora
Rating: ***
Dar Azawad is a rural Moroccan riad that offers a variety of guest rooms, from authentic tented mud huts to standard hotel rooms and luxurious, spacious suites. Located in Zagora on the edge of the Sahara Desert, there’s something for everyone who wants to experience a desert journey.
The tented huts have to be seen to be appreciated. Made of camel hair and mud, they are brightly furnished and provide a real ‘back-to-basics’ nomadic stay, with shared wash rooms and no air conditioning. If you’re looking for a genuine desert-living experience, these are the perfect choice.
Made of camel hair and mud, the tented huts provide a real ‘back-to-basics’ nomadic stay – the genuine desert-living experience”
However, if you want a more traditional Moroccan riad stay, both the standard rooms and the suites are decorated in a nomadic, colourful fashion, combining Western comforts of en-suite showers and air conditioning with traditional embellishments such as Tadlekt lime tiling.
Because of its desert edge location, Dar Azawad is perfect for travellers who wish to explore the Sahara. For a truly authentic experience, we’d recommend a camel trek, though if camels don’t tickle your fancy there are also jeep tours available.
Although it’s rural, the location is bursting with other attractions. Just ten minutes walk from the riad is a fortified mud hamlet, known as a ksar. A short drive away are M’hamid, Zagora and Tagounite, where you will find souks selling hand-made crafts, while within the hotel itself there is a small boutique from which you can purchase traditional fabrics, rugs and wood carvings.
The restaurant at Dar Azawad is perfect for a romantic dinner for two, tastefully lit by candles and lanterns that provide an intimate feel. Meals can also be served outside at poolside pavilions. Dar Azawad’s chef trained in France and has worked in Saudi Arabian hotels, meaning that there’s a sumptuous mix of cuisine available.
Vegetarians will be well catered for in Dar Azawad, and other dietary requirements can be met too”
Generally, breakfast and dinner are included in the price and lunch is available for a small additional charge. Vegetarians will be well catered for in Dar Azawad and other dietary requirements can be met too.
When you’re not out exploring the desert on a camel or visiting the nearby towns for a shopping trip, there is ample space to relax at Dar Azawad. Unlike some other hotels, the swimming pool is of a good size, meaning you can enjoy a proper swim if you wish. There are also sunbeds and seated areas around the pool to soak up the glorious weather. For those of a fairer complexion and anyone wanting to spend time out of the sun, there is a shaded seating area beneath the trellis, and there’s also a sitting room full of books and magazines inside the riad.

There’s also a hammam and spa, complete with massage, hair and nail salon, aromatherapy and Jacuzzi – guaranteed to leave you feeling refreshed, relaxed and ready for your next adventure.
If you want to try something a little different, the hotel can also arrange a range of overnight camps in the desert. A driver, jeep and tent are provided. Quad biking is also popular for some younger travellers.

Hotel of the week: Dar Attajmil
Modern life, with all its distractions, noise, hustle and bustle – wouldn’t it be nice to get away from it all for a while? Relaxation can be hard with so much going on and for many couples spending quality time together is no mean feat in this day and age. That’s why for our Hotel of the Week this week we’ve chosen an intimate riad in Marrakech – perfect for some quality chill-out time.
Hotel: Dar Attajmil
Region: Marrakech
Rating: **
Dar Attajmil is a small, intimate Marrakech riad tucked away from city life in a quiet side street of the old Medina. The lack of passing traffic makes Dar Attajmil an oasis of calm from the bustling city, and the aim of owners Lucrezia and Monica is to help you get away from the pressures of everyday life. There are no televisions or telephones in the hotel, but there is a wi-fi connection to stay in touch if you need to.
The lack of passing traffic makes Dar Attajmil an oasis of calm from the bustling city”
With just four rooms and one private suite, the hotel provides the perfect intimate setting for couples and small groups of friends, while also being ideal for individual travellers looking for some “me” time. It’s hard to believe, but this riad is just 15 minutes from the airport and five minutes from the main square. On arrival you’ll wind through a little pink side street past local vendors to the door – where the hotel’s resident cat will be waiting to greet you.
The riad comprises a peaceful roof terrace with wicker furniture and cushions, an indoor lounge, patio courtyard and even its own library.
Each of the bedrooms is individually decorated, with some Italian influence as the proprietors are originally from Italy. This mix of cultures is also reflected in the menu, which is Moroccan with Mediterranean undertones and can cater for a vegetarian diet. Most of the cuisine is made from organic ingredients delivered fresh from a local farm and the cook will happily share the secrets of excellent cooking. There is also the opportunity to take part in a cookery course if you want to learn how to make these delicious meals yourself.
Dar Attajmil has recently developed a new Moroccan cookery-based activity where guests accompany hotel kitchen staff to the local Bab Doukkala Souk food markets for ingredients and spices in the morning, and then assist their chef in the preparation of their own three-course Moroccan lunch, including homemade Moroccan bread. The meal is then eaten on the roof terrace or patio area.

Food is served throughout the day anywhere in the riad and catering services, from individual lunches to private parties, can be provided on demand. The hotel can even supply entertainment in the shape of traditional Moroccan music or contemporary DJs.
For some truly invigorating relaxation, the hammam is a must. Dar Attajmil has an excellent in house spa service provided by local beauticians. With services including massage using famous Moroccan Aragan oil, shiatsu and a range of face, body and hair treatments, your guaranteed to unwind at this cosy Moroccan riad. If you’re feeling more adventurous, the team at Dar Attajmil can also organise art and craft or music workshops, horse riding, golf, archaeological tours and mountain or desert excursions. There’s also a local tailor who can recreate your favourite dress or make you an entirely new Moroccan kaftan.
While the hotel is happy to cater for small families and even offers an on-demand babysitting service, guests should remember the relaxed and quiet atmosphere of the hotel may not suit all families.

Hotel of the Week: Chez Rebecca
There’s never a bad time to go travelling. Taking a year out before (or during) university, paying off the mortgage and seeing the kids leave home, or just taking a break from the rat race, when the opportunity to see the world crops up, you’d be mad not to take it. In celebration of a more nomadic break, this week’s Hotel of the Week is a self-catering apartment in Essaouira.
Hotel: Chez Rebecca
Region: Essaouria
Rating: **
Chez Rebecca is a private self-catering apartment in Essaouira, on Morocco’s Atlantic Coast. With a large double bedroom and a smaller room with additional beds, Chez Rebecca can sleep four to five people – perfect for a family or group of friends – while also being intimate enough to suit a holidaying couple.
Unlike larger Moroccan hotels, this private villa has a real family feel. The manager will collect arriving guests from the airport at any time of the day and the manager’s brother runs a taxi firm, which means highly competitive rates for travelling around the area with a driver you know you can trust.
Unlike larger Moroccan hotels, this private villa has a real family feel.”
The apartment itself is gorgeous. It overlooks a sheltered private terrace complete with table for up to six people. There’s a second terrace on the roof, shared with three other apartments, giving you the perfect opportunity to meet other travellers and holidaymakers against the backdrop of the medina and the Atlantic ocean. Up here you’ll find chairs, tables, sunloungers and a communal barbecue.
Within the apartment there is a spacious, airy living room (where, if you’re lucky, a friendly neighbourhood cat might just drop in for a visit). This living room is the perfect combination of traditional and modern, with an authentic open fireplace and subtly concealed satellite TV, DVD player and music system. The apartment also has a wireless internet connection.
A second open fireplace is found in the master bedroom, which also opens out on to a private terrace – perfect for catching the sun. The smaller bedroom contains two bed settees and a window overlooking the terrace.
Essaouria itself is an area steeped with history. Protected by a natural bay, there is evidence that Essaouria has been occupied since prehistoric days. However, the present city was only built in the 18th Century, when Mohammed Ben Abdellah al-Qatib had it rebuilt and encouraged Moroccan Jews to handle trade with Europe.
Today Essouira is a UNESCO World Heritage Listed city, with a small harbour where sardines and conger eels are offered in abundance. Camel treks, windsurfing and kite surfing are all popular activities on the beach, while the medina boasts a plethora of micro arts and crafts businesses, including cabinet making and thuya wood-carving, which uses the roots of the Tetraclinis tree.

When you get hungry, you’ll be spoiled for choice. Chez Rebecca is close to the food souks, where you can purchase all manner of fresh ingredients to cook in the apartment’s open plan kitchen. You must also order a mouth-watering home cooked meal at least once – it’s a treat your tastebuds won’t forget. There are also numerous restaurants just a few minutes’ walk away if you fancy eating out.
Morocco Gateway can offer special discount deals on Chez Rebecca, as well as other Morocco hotels and riads. To book your stay at Chez Rebecca, follow this link. We guarantee you won’t forget this charming apartment in a hurry!
